How to modify a web page
Instructions how to manipulate web pages |
- Previous warnings/considerations:
- I'm not an expert. I speak roughly, that's to say, I give you basic
instructions to start working.
- The web pages were created by an obssessed of precision:
copy everything exactly!
Don't trust your memory: try to use "copy & stick".
- Very important: web pages don't bite. You shouldn't be afraid
of them. It's impossible that you damage them when manipulating,
the worst you can have is that you waste your time...
How can I modify a web page?
You cannot modify a page which is in the net.
What you should do is to copy and save it in your computer.
To do this:
- Create a new folder entitled, for instance, "my webs"
in your computer or in your server account.
- Save (File / Save As...) this document in the folder you have created
and with a short name which has only letters and numbers (no accents, no spaces...)
put the extension "html".
(example: "web01.html")
- Close the document which in the net.
- Open the document "web01.html" (which is the one you can modify
because it is in your computer).
- Open its source code (right click on a text, "see source code")
- Search this paragraph (search menu... "this paragraph")
in the source code:
"the lecturer is very kind and he manages that his lessons,
besides being instructive, are entretaining."
Already done? Are you here? Great!
- Write anything in the previous paragraph
(if you don't have any idea, for instance:
"he's the best lecturer I've ever had without any doubt".
If you think about anything different, try not to be offensive, because it will be known...)
- Click "File / Save".
- Go back to Internet Explorer.
- Press "update": the same web page will be displayed
with all the changes you have made.
You can change any other text, being careful not to modify the labels within.
You can also practise repeating the same operation with any other web page.
Gift yourself with good news on the front page of a newspaper!
It's free; the only problem is that you've just invented it,
and it doesn't appear on the other newspaper's editions.
What programme should you use to make web pages?
There are quite a few programmes for it.
Up till now I've only wanted to show you that a good system to start
making web pages is this following one, the most basic one:
to do it by means of any word text editor (booknotes or Word Pad)
in order to edit the web page, and Internet Navigator you prefer
(Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox...)
to visualize it.
So that you get familiar with (looking at source codes and modifying them),
the different "tags" and ways to arrange the pages.
I was taught so by the school webmaster,
Pere Pau Soley, and I'm glad to have learned it; I have sourted out problems
that I didn't know how with other more sophisticated programmes.
I don't advise you to use programmes like Microsoft Word,
or even other specific ones like Microsoft Front Page at all: they are
"too smart", they make your work easy, but they also catch you in their nets,
up till you get stopped and at the mercy of them. Furthermore,
they make a lot of "noise" (not necessary instructions).
To make web pages, I recommend the programme
mps htmlgate free.
The mps htmlgate free is a simple programme to use,
it is clear and it does not make you be confused,
it does not "impose" you what you can do or what you cannot do.
And, I fancy the person who makes it: it's not a multinational company
but a danish student with a name and a surname: Michael
Pham. But this does not mean that there is not any other better programme;
simply, that I don't know it...
