Program
The planning area lies in the port of Thessaloniki, specifically it is the southwest pier of the city's port. The pier covers various activities, both social and cultural, like bars, restaurants, museums, screening halls and a kindergarten. The main access to the area is on Nikis Avenue, which lies on the seaside of the city. It also attracts fishermen and tourist boats.
The complete area can be planned, with the exception of the old warehouse buildings an their current uses. The only building that could not be taken into consideration is the recent kindergarten, which lies near the main entrance.
The main theme of the project is an urban refurbishment of the pier and its surroundings, so that the whole area could be serviced and become alive and vivid during the whole day and also during the whole year. In order to achieve this, the current uses should get a stronger character, with new installations that will accomplish this purpose, like kiosks, info-points, fishing places, reversible and easily assembled constructions.
Another concept that could be introduced in addition to the first, is a possibility for swimming in the area, with direct access form the pier, inside the sea, but also within definitive borders. Since a long time ago this possibility has not been available (due to water pullition). Now, it would be very important to give this chance back to the citizens. If the students think that some other additional uses are necessary, they are free to introduce them in their concept.
Last but not least, the pier should not be considered as an isolated object, which requires a fashionable desing approach, but on the contrary as a constituent, vivid part of the whole downtown area of the city. In this way, student groups are free to study and propose any possible adjustment to the surrounding urban places.
Design work

Structural plan of the development idea for the total area on a scale of 1:1000, plus abstract description of the construction figures, and the traffic development.

Site plan and model of the part with the pier on scale of 1:500, with the description of the small buildings, the development (cars, pedestrians) and the arrangement of the spare areas.

Focus on a specific point of the area, which shows the installations and their relation to the water. The scale could vary from 1:200 to 1:50.
