    Notes for Systematic Town-Observation
Urban Analysis [ according to Gerhard Fehl, RWTH Aachen, Germany ]

Aim of analytical drawing is to begin with oneself -and later with another person, who does not know the place, to bring clearness on how a building, a piece or the whole of a town is organized and structured in respect of its physical-spatial order.

    A. Decomposition of a building or a space in its structural components on eight levels:
    • 1. The basic geometrical structure of the volume: cuboid, cube.
    • 2. The subdivision of the geometrical structure; the joining composition of different volumina.
    • 3. The layer of carved-in geometrical elements: windows, door, etc.
    • 4. The layer of jointed plastic elements laid on the volume: pillars, attics, bases, balconies, cornices, etc.
    • 5. The layer of decorative elements: friezes, pilaster strips, etc.
    • 6. The layer of application against the background of the basic structure of the volume: flags, sign-boards, shields, etc.
    • 7. The layer of planting related to the building.

    • 8. Notice carefully all the time the proportions of the basic geometrical structure, of the jointed elements on all levels and its reciprocal effects.

    B. The insertion (incorporation) of building, tree, and space into the topography: cross-sections and profiles; joining to the terrain.

    C. Hunting up or detecting the architectural-urban concept in its origin: axis, profiles, relation of building to space, indoor-space to outdoor-space, access, etc. the implementation of the concept and by this arising inconsistencies, unsolved problems.

    D. Town consists of fragments: how are they marked to each other? How are they related to each other or is there a mutual ignorance? There are breakings e.g. between the historical and the baroque city, between the baroque and the modern city?
How are scales changing on the breaking-points, if the new inserts into the old or adapts to the elder?

    E. Green-trees, green areas, etc.- What kind of roll does it play in urban space? Distant view; formation of space by alleys, spatial close or limitation, etc.

    F. We move in a city either aimless strolling or single-minded. Which have been the destinations the urban concepts were directed to? Special meaning meets to the often with special efforts alienated pathways: how are we lead from one point to the other? How are the sequences of images? When does a distant destination emerge firstly? Is there a sudden break in the line of movement? What is it we expect at our destination? How is the historical access, the layout of circulation, the routing (wegeführung) to our destination changed by modernistion of the town, or even disturbed?

    G. How are the squares (urban spaces) organized in the fabric of the town: isolated, interconnected; how are the connected? Is the connection deliberate or accidental?

    H. How can we make a better conceptual arrangement to unsatisfactory physical-spatial situations? Proposals, supplements, etc.
