"SEWING: URBAN, IDENTITY, LANDSCAPE" minute, by Pedro Rodrigues

Sewing aims to gather the most important features that define Oldenburg identity, using those as the foundation for a new urbanity in the city. An historical city perfectly balanced with the landscape, where water paths and green areas are seen has inherited features.

The project focus on recreating the ancient water paths together with a urbanity closer to the atmosphere of the ancient city, were people may work, live and enjoy a balance atmosphere, together with the sense of belonging.

The proposal focus on 3 stages: a new built mass that meets a water mass, creating a balance between the built and the unbuilt; the continuation of the roads and circulation paths from the surrounding urban mesh (essentially orthogonal made for cars); the creation of new organic pedestrian paths (closer to the mesh of the ancient city), aimed to recreate the atmosphere lived in the historic center.

When the water meets the mass it carves it, and the built becomes long and naturally thin, and the unbuilt walks fluid creating cannels and lakes able to be appropriated.

The mixed use building gathers industry, services, commercial, research, education, sports and leisure in allowing a continuous use of the place.

The relations with surrounding elements are carefully treated. The integrating of the highway at north (with a new highway facility); the relation with the boulevard at west (allowing a new skyline and visual contact with the lake); the green belt at east (lake and green area); and the relation with the railway at south (rethinking the relation of the tower and the city)

The train, the new regions landmark, gathers a hotel, library, commercial area, research and a sport facility, taking the advantage of the water paths connected to the university and a sloping roof able to be used as a winter sport facility.

Being able to gather the university and the technological center in the proposal, the project links to the existing facilities allowing an integration of all the features found in the place, in an approach that aims to create a new centrality balanced with the core features of the place. The jury therefore has decided to award the project with the first prize.
